Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wants to give President Obama the sole authority to raise the debt ceiling 3 times before 2012. He is working this weekend with the Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on their so-called backup plan which has that very authority as the center piece. Furthermore, it would require a two thirds vote to override the debt ceiling increase.
I can only think of one response to that, “You’ve Got To Be Kidding!!” Actually I can think of a few more responses.
“Are you crazy!” “What are you smoking?” “Are you trying to be primary-ied by the TEA Party?” “Who’s side are you on?”
You want to give a president who has increased the total outstanding public debt by almost $4 trillion in only on third the time in office as his two immediate predecessors (30 months, Obama, versus Bush: +$4.9 trillion in 96 months, Clinton: $2 trillion in 96 months) authority to raise the debt ceiling 3 times before 2012? [data from treasurydirect.gov]
You want to give a president who has found a way to increase unemployment rate from 7.8% in January, 2009 when he took office to 9.2% in June of this year the authority to raise the debt ceiling 3 times before 2012? [data from US Department of Labor web site]
You want to give a president who has presided over an increase of 65% in total annual number of Americans receiving food stamps, an increase of about 17.6 million Americans, authority to raise the debt ceiling 3 times before 2012? [data as reported by the US Dept of Agriculture]
You want to give a president who has blatantly disregarded the will of the people over and over again and is shown to be by every measurable factor a total and complete failure the authority to raise the debt ceiling 3 times before 2012?
Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Brarack Obama, and all the rest of the big spending, tax increasing liberals must be thinking, “We don’t need friends when we have opponents like Mitch McConnell?” It must be very difficult indeed to hide their elation with this idea. It’s more than could have ever dreamed of.
In case you missed it, this fiscal conservative is strongly opposed to this idea! I’m actually thinking this is insanity. We know what Obama will do. He will increase the debt ceiling all three times he’s authorized to do so, and by as much as he can get away with. This policy gives him the opening he wants so he can continue this insane spending. It does nothing to solve our economic problems. It will worsen them.
I’m calling for the Republicans ignore your Senate leader and hold firm. I prefer no debt ceiling increase at all, and I will be disappointed if the Republicans falter and allow one. But if an increase is coupled with committed aggressive reductions in spending, committed actions to reform entitlement spending and simplify the tax code and reduce taxes forever, if it is coupled with statutory caps on spending for all time, then I will accept it, and continue to fight for more.
The worst possible outcome of this impasse would be to give the president (especially this president) the authority to raise the debt ceiling on his own. I’m shocked that I am even hearing it proposed. The fact that it is a Republican who came up with this idea is just plain frightening to me.
